Agnes Groom

3. Agnes Groom, the third child of James Henry Groom was born in 1881 in Levuka, Fiji. She married Andrew Henry Duthie on 30 March 1901 in Nausori, Fiji. He was born on 31 July 1879 in Rewa, Fiji. Agnes Groom, the third child of James Henry Groom died on 26 August 1907 in Tamavua, Navua, Fiji during childbirth. Her husband, Andrew Henry Duthie died on 30 January 1932 in Suva, Fiji.

Details of their lives were published in “The Duthie Saga” by Elizabeth Adams in 2012. An extract from this publication follows:

“Andrew Henry Duthie, the first of Alex and Emma Duthie’s Fijian born children, was born at Uluicalia on the Upper Rewa River on 31 July 1879. After leaving school Andrew worked for the CSR, initially as a blacksmith. He was 17 years of age in 1896 when references to him in CSR correspondence first appear. Andrew was married to Agnes Groom by ‘Wesleyan rites’ at Nausori on 30 March 1901. Agnes, aged 20 was born in Levuka, daughter of James Henry Groom and his wife Moli. James Groom, born in Tasmania, was the postmaster at Levuka. Witnesses to the marriage were David Williams and Andrew’s father Barclay Alexander Duthie.

It was a tragic time for Andrew with his father Alex Duthie in the Leper Colony at Beqa, the death of his wife Agnes during childbirth 26 August 1907 Navua, then the death of his new born son Andrew 17 months later. Left with three daughters aged five, four and two to care for, Andrew somehow managed until he remarried in 1912. The youngest child, Edith, went to live with her grandmother Emma at Nausori. Andrew Henry Duthie, died 30 January 1932 Suva, Fiji leaving a second family of (in total) 10 children. They had children:
